GASTRIC PERFORATION SECONDARY TO INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON

BACKGROUND: Gastric perforation secondary to intragastric balloons is a rare but potentially devastating complication.

METHODS: A 28-year old male experiened severe abdominal pain one week following the placement of an intragastric balloon He was taken to the operating room where he underwent endoscopic removal of the balloon and laparoscopic repair of a perforation.

RESULTS: The balloon was removed and perforation was successfully repaired laparoscopically without complication.

CONCLUSIONS: Gastric perforation is a rare but serious complication associated with intragastric balloon therapy. Providers must be prepared to recognize and treat this serious complication.
