<< Back to Reasons Home

Reason #2: Expanded Saturday Programming: PG/MOC Courses
Ticketed Session indicates a ticketed session requiring a separate registration and fee.
CME Session indicates a session offering CME with self-assessment.

On the Saturday of the meeting, whereas in recent years the SSAT has offered a single Maintenance of Certification Course focusing on one segment of the GI tract, the Society is now offering two half-day Postgraduate/MOC Courses in the morning. For 2015, these separately ticketed events are offered in both HPB and Small Bowel/Colorectal.

Ticketed Session CME Session SSAT Postgraduate / Maintenance of Certification Courses
Saturday, May 16, 2015, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Reflecting the Society’s commitment to international outreach, these morning PG/MOC Courses feature renowned overseas faculty. Completion of either of these courses helps fulfill Part II Maintenance of Certification requirements. These courses each provide a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, of which a maximum of 4 credits meet the requirements for Self-Assessment.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACHES TO PANCREATIC AND HEPATOBILIARY SURGERIES will focus on pancreatic and liver surgery. The format will be a mix of didactic sessions along with videos and conclude with case presentations. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the history of laparoscopic and robotic pancreas and liver surgery and analyze whether they provide similar perioperative outcomes compared to open procedures;
  • Explain whether minimally invasive approaches to pancreas and liver surgery provide similar oncologic outcomes compared to open procedures;
  • Recognize whether minimally invasive approaches to pancreas surgery can be performed in a cost-effective manner;
  • Determine if it is feasible to perform complex liver surgery utilizing a minimally invasive approach; and
  • Cite how many cases a surgeon needs to perform in order to achieve the learning curve.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE COLORECTAL SURGERY will focus on topics such as diverticulitis, intra-operative management of IBD, and colon cancer. The format will be a mix of didactic sessions and case presentations. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of minimally invasive surgery in the management and treatment of benign and malignant colorectal diseases; and
  • Explain the different technical aspects of performing laparoscopic and robotics colorectal surgery.
