The 2012 SSAT MOC Course, "Evidence Based Treatment of Hepatopancreatobiliary Diseases," will be held during the 53rd Annual Meeting and in conjunction with Digestive Disease Week. This is the second in a three-year cycle of courses that will help fulfill Part II Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements for surgeons.
The course will be divided into five sessions as follows, and at the conclusion of each session participants will be able to:
1. Malignant Diseases of the Liver
- Appropriately apply diagnostic modalities and select for resection patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases and cholangiocarcinoma;
- Appropriately select and sequence interventional and nonsurgical treatment modalities available to improve resectability of hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases and cholangiocarcinoma; and
- Appropriately implement the most up-to-date systemic cytotoxic and biologic strategies in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal liver metastases.
2. Benign Diseases of the Pancreas
- Tailor treatment decisions for benign liver lesions based on current understanding of natural history and recent advances in diagnostic imaging;
- Distinguish among types of cystic lesions of the intra- and extra hepatic bile ducts and use this understanding to make treatment recommendations in adult patients; and
- Evaluate the pros and cons of emerging minimally invasive surgical approaches to benign lesions of the liver and bile ducts.
3. Gallstone and Gallbladder Disease
- Discuss the risks and benefits of various techniques for evaluation and management of common bile duct stones; and
- Identify appropriate patients for various approaches based on presenting symptoms, patient comorbidity, and local expertise (gastrointestinal and surgical).
4. Benign Diseases of the Pancreas
- Assess outcomes in the surgical management of chronic pancreatitis;
- Review indications for operative management of acute pancreatitis; and
- Discuss evaluation of incidental pancreatic cysts.
5. Malignant Disease and IPMN
- Understand the biologic complexity of IPMN and when to offer surveillance and/or resection;
- Understand the biologic variability of neuroendocrine tumors, available medical therapy and operative conduct; and
- Learn about classic and borderline respectability, neoadjuvant therapy and operative techniques to resect pancreatic cancer.
Each participant will be required to complete both a pre- and post-course test prior to claiming CME Credits and Certificates of Attendance.
Supplement your Annual Meeting registration by signing up for the 2012 MOC Course, for which SSAT members receive preferred rates. Or you can register for just the MOC Course without having to register for the Annual Meeting / DDW.
