HISTOPATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS AND HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION IN SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Background: Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most currently used surgical techniques for treating obesity. Studies show there is a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients undergoing this surgery and there is no enough evidence to support the need for its eradication before the procedure.
Aim: To correlate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastric histopathological findings in resected specimen of sleeve gastrectomy.
Method(s): Histopathological and clinical data were prospectively collected from all patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy at a Brazilian university hospital from June 2013 to March 2014.
Results: Twenty-one patients were included in the study. Most were female (76%) with an average age of 41.95 years and an initial average Body Mass Index of 41.85Kg/m2. Before surgery, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection was 42% (nine patients). Eight patients presented foveolar hyperplasia in the surgical specimen with significant association to before surgery Helicobacter pylori infection (p = 0.002).
Conclusion: There is a positive relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection in the sample studied and foveolar hyperplasia at histopathological specimen.
