Background Gastric cancer (GC) is the most common cancers in the west of China. We observed that the rate of GC in young patients has increased in our area recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical clinical features of young patients with GC.
Methods The study was retrospective of young patients with GC from January 2008 to December 2014 in the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. A total of 436 patients with age were less than 40 years. The data included the gender, age, GC family history, the onset symptoms, clinicopathological, ceancer metastasized and treatment.
Results Male female ratio was 2.18:1, 28 (6%) were 15-25 years and 293(67%) were 35-40 years in young patients (Table1). These young GC patients like splicy and hot food, especially in 15-25 years. Epigastric discomfort or pain, haematemesis and or melaena were main symptoms. In all GC patients, 44% had Helicobacter pylori infection. Histological type included 50% poor differentiated adenocarcinoma, 21% signet ring cell carcinaoma and others. 18% GC has metastasized to other organs even malignant ascites (Table 2). Resection was only in 75% of the young GC patients.
Conclusion Young people are easy to ignore their epigastric discomfort. Once the diagnosis is already in advanced GC, and even lost the opportunity of operation. Diet and living style is an important factor in young GC patients.
