Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become popular among bariatric surgeons because of surgical simplicity and good postoperative outcomes. We present our experience on LSG as a single stage bariatric procedure for morbid obesity and its follow up results
Methods: Between June 2011 and November 2014 a total of 56 patients underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. 48 patients completed a minimum of 6 months follow up, 44 patients completed 1 yr follow up, 33 completed 2 yrs follow up and 13 patients completed 3 yrs follow up.
Results: There were 36 (66.6%) women. Mean age was 45 yrs (19-64yrs) . Mean body weight was 115.5kgs (79 -175 kgs). Mean body mass index was 46.1 kg/m2 (33.3-71.6 kg/m2) and mean excess body weight was 62.84 kgs (32-113 kgs) . The mean post operative percent excess body wt loss achieved was 49.17%, 64.62%, 64.28%, 58.67% at 6months, 1 yr, 2yr and 3yr respectively. 12/24 (50%) had resolution of diabetes and 16/29 (55.1%) had resolution of Hypertension. Resolution or improvement of sleep apnea was seen in 87.1 % (34/39) patients. BAROS outcome was excellent in 2, very good in 27, good in 17 and fair in 2 patients. Framingham risk score and serum levels of vitamin B12 and Iron will be updated and presented.
Conclusion LSG is an effective procedure in terms of weight loss comorbidity resolution and quality of life. Larger randomised studies are needed to establish efficacy as a single stage procedure on long term.
